2. Selous Serena Camp

Selous Serena Camp is the ultimate wilderness retreat. Set amidst dense indigenous forests, the luxurious tents are an elegant mix of canvas walls, under thatch roofs. Decorated in time honored safari style, the tents feature Victorian-styled bathrooms, crystal chandeliers, opulent rugs and rosewood furniture. A private sun deck with expansive river views completes the experience. The charming central main lodge is slightly raised on timber decks with excellent views of the Selous Game Reserve. The open-sided dining room offers a selection of exclusive seating areas, an elegant library, a charming lounge, and a safari bar.  A spectacular ‘infinity’ pool and sundeck is situated high above the lodge.

Itinerary

Day 1. Arusha, Tanzania / Dar es Salaam

Transfer to Arusha Airport for your scheduled flight to Dar es Salaam. You are met on arrival by an African Travel Inc. representative and transferred to your hotel. (D)

Day 2. Dar es Salaam / Selous Game Reserve

Fly off to the remote Selous Game Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Tanzania’s second largest national park. Your hosts welcome you to your intimate safari camp, high above the Rufiji River. Selous - larger than the entire nation of Switzerland – boasts more than half of Tanzania’s elephant population. Begin your safari with a boat ride down East Africa’s largest river, the mighty Rufiji. Your expert boatman will quietly maneuver along the inlets to help you get close-up photos of the many hippos and crocodiles. Be sure to grab your binoculars for some of the world’s best water birding. Tonight, your wildlife immersion continues as you relax on your veranda watching the animals on the riverbanks. (BLD)

Day 3. Selous Game Reserve

Following a leisurely breakfast, join your expert ranger for a game drive as the animals come down to the water to drink. Traverse the woodlands and plains, largely untouched by man, as you look out for some 60,000 elephant, 200,000 buffalo and nearly a third of the world’s approximately 4,000 remaining rare wild dogs. Spend the midday lounging near the pool at your camp and continue your exploration of the reserve’s wetlands this afternoon. After a fine dinner, tuck in for the night to a chorus of bellowing hippos and whooping hyenas in the distance. (BLD)

Day 4. Selous Game Reserve

Rise early for a gentle stroll through the wilderness, taking a closer look at the smaller life in the bush with your guide. Depending on your interests, learn about the area’s ecology, birding, tracking and medicinal uses of trees. Later, venture to the stunning Stiegler’s Gorge, carved where the Great Ruaha River flows into the Rufiji River. Return to try some fishing on the lake or set out on an afternoon game drive. Toast your day’s adventures and enjoy a hearty dinner prepared by your chef. (BLD)

Day 5. Selous Game Reserve / Depart

Revel in your last morning soaking up the pristine wilderness. You’ll soon be on your way to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Dar es Salaam, where a day room has been reserved for your use. Later tonight, you are transferred to the airport for your onward arrangements. (B)
