3. Kapama River Lodge

The majestic northern Drakensberg Mountains forms the backdrop to the lodge, which is positioned along a bend of the seasonal Kapama River. Decorated to reflect old Africa, the air-conditioned suites feature full, en-suite bathrooms and private patios with uninterrupted views over the Big Five game reserve. Amenities include fans, hairdryers, mini-bar, safe, telephone, Wi-Fi internet access and tea/coffee making facilities. The central lodge area includes an enclosed dining area, where breakfasts and lunches are served and a bar and lounge with two large fireplaces. Evening meals are often enjoyed seated around a crackling fire in the Rhino Boma, where buffet meals showcase the pan-African dishes. The large rim-flow swimming pool is the perfect place to relax on a lazy afternoon.  There is also a media room, which has cable TV and wildlife DVDs.  Activities at Kapama include morning and afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles and guided bush walks, conducted by experienced rangers.  All game viewing drives and walks are shared with fellow camp guests.  Kapama also offers some unique wildlife experiences at an additional charge - visit to the Hoedspruit Centre for Endangered Species to see rare wildlife up close; elephant interactions with an African elephant; romantic sleep-outs under the African sky or decadent Spa treatments at their Wellness Centre.

Day 2. Cape Town

Immerse yourself in spectacular ocean vistas and quaint villages on today’s exploration of "The Fairest Cape." Pass by the glamorous homes and exquisite coastline of Millionaires Paradise and on to the charming working harbor of Hout Bay. Keep your camera on hand to photograph the rocky seascapes and wildlife as you wind along the legendary Chapman's Peak Drive and explore the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Get up close to a colony of penguins at Boulders Beach. Drive through the naval port of Simon’s Town before returning to Cape Town. (B)

Day 3. Cape Town

Today's eye-opening excursion offers profound insight into the people's ongoing initiatives to gain self-sufficiency. The abundance of hope and creative energy found in the townships will leave you inspired and humbled. Visit the "spaza" shops and "shebeen" bars, meet a traditional Xhosa healer ("sangoma"), learn about grassroots health care, and view the homes of the emerging middle class. Continue to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in time to board the ferry to Robben Island. The island, now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site, was where the former South African President, Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 of his 27 years. Dinner this evening offers a vibrant and authentic African experience. (BD)

Day 4. Cape Town / Johannesburg

Leave the "Mother City" for your flight north to Johannesburg, known affectionately as Jo'burg. Visit Liliesleaf, once the nerve center of the liberation movement. Today Liliesleaf is one of South Africa's foremost museums, where the journey to democracy in South Africa is honored. Learn about the inspirational leaders who fought to end apartheid. (B)

Day 5. Johannesburg

Delve deeper into South Africa's turbulent past with a trip to Soweto, a sprawling multicultural metropolis of more than 3.5 million people on the outskirts of Johannesburg. Visit Freedom Square, the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Vilakazi Street, formerly home to both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Visit the Apartheid Museum for a deeper look at the humbling and ultimately inspiring journey from the dark days of segregation to Mandela's release from prison, and his policy of reconciliation rather than retribution. Day 6. Johannesburg / Kruger Private Reserve

For another slice of the authentic South Africa experience, take wing on a safari adventure in Kapama Private Game Reserve near Kruger National Park. Touch down and you're just a short drive away to your lodging. After a warm welcome and delicious lunch, meet your game ranger and hop aboard an open vehicle for an afternoon game drive. Look out for the Big Five, as well as hippo, antelope, zebra, giraffe and an abundance of bird life. Towards dusk, your tracker will spotlight the nocturnal species as they come out to hunt. Tonight, gather around a crackling fire and dine on a delectable variety of local and continental dishes in the outdoor boma. (BLD)

Day 7. Kruger Private Reserve

Awaken with the soft light of sunrise when the animals are most lively. Join your ranger for a game drive or try a bushwalk to focus on smaller wildlife and plants. Return to your lodge for some leisure time at the pool or relax with a book. In the afternoon set off in search of the regal kudu, or the waterbuck with its distinctive white circle around the tail or the shy duiker. After an exhilarating day, join your companions for refreshing drinks and a hearty dinner. Spend your last evening, taking in the sounds of the wilderness and watching the Southern constellations illuminate the endless sky. (BLD)

Day 8. Kruger Private Reserve / Depart

After an early morning game drive and substantial breakfast, bid farewell to your new found safari friends as you transfer to the airport for your return flight to Johannesburg and your onward arrangements. (B)
