ABOUT TRAVELING TO AFRICA
When is the best time to go?
Africa is a year-round destination, with the best time depending on client’s interests and availability.
- Dry Season (May–October): Ideal for game viewing across most regions.
- Green Season (November–April): Lush landscapes, fewer tourists, better deals, and exceptional birdwatching.
Refer to our temperature and rainfall guide for more information
When is the Great Migration?
The migration is a year-round cycle. From August to October, it is in Kenya's Maasai Mara. At other times, it moves through Tanzania's Serengeti. Keep in mind that the exact timing can vary depending on the weather and annual rainfall pattern. We’ll help you design an itinerary with the best chances for exceptional wildlife viewing, tailored to your clients’ travel dates.
What destinations do you offer?
We offer journeys across 14 African destinations: Botswana | Egypt | Kenya | Madagascar| Mauritius | Morocco | Mozambique | Namibia| Rwanda| Seychelles| South Africa |Tanzania | Zambia | Zimbabwe
Which countries offer the best safari experiences?
Each region offers something unique.
- South Africa: Big Five, malaria-free options, and diverse experiences.
- Kenya & Tanzania: Classic wildlife and cultural safaris.
- Botswana: Upscale, private water and land safaris.
- Zambia & Zimbabwe: Untamed wilderness and Victoria Falls.
- Namibia: Desert-adapted wildlife and surreal landscapes.
- Rwanda: Gorilla trekking and Big Five in one trip.
How can I assure clients that safari is safe?
We partner only with reputable lodges and camps that follow strict safety protocols, and all game drives are led by highly trained professionals who understand animal behavior and prioritize guest protection. Accommodations are typically located in remote, secure areas designed for comfort and safety. When visiting major cities like Nairobi, Johannesburg, or Cape Town, we recommend the same precautions as in any large international destination. We work exclusively with trusted local partners to ensure secure transfers, accommodations, and experiences throughout your journey.
What support is available during the trip?
Our 24/7 Guest Services team is available throughout the journey to assist with any concerns or last-minute needs. From arrival to departure, your clients are never alone—we’re here to help every step of the way.
SAFARI BASICS
Are safaris physically demanding?
Most safaris are not. Game drives are done in comfortable vehicles with minimal walking required. More active options—like bush walks—are available but always optional. Safaris can be tailored to match each traveler’s comfort and activity level.
What makes a safari luxury?
everal factors define a luxury safari. First, the accommodation—high-end lodges or camps with just a few suites, offering all-inclusive service that covers meals, drinks, laundry, and guided activities. Many also feature extras like wine cellars, wellness centers, and art studios. Second is the style of travel—custom-made safaris offer full flexibility, while group trips vary in luxury depending on group size. Transportation is another key factor - luxury safaris typically use bush flights or helicopters instead of long road transfers. Inclusions like hot air balloon rides, private game drives, and exclusive experiences add value. Another factor is access to private reserves, which allow off-road driving, night safaris, and far fewer vehicles—creating a more intimate, uncrowded wildlife experience. Lastly, the level of service—from VIP airport meet-and-greets to dedicated private guides and 24/7 support —ensures every detail is handled with care.
What’s a typical safari day like?
- Early Morning: Game drive and breakfast.
- Midday: Time to relax, take a dip, or book a spa treatment.
- Afternoon: Optional activities like bush walks, more relaxing, then high-tea followed by another game drive.
- Evening: Dinner under the stars, followed by stargazing or storytelling around the fire.
What animals will my clients see on safari?
Wildlife sightings vary by region and season, but most safaris offer excellent chances to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, hippos, and various antelopes. Lions, hyenas, and cheetahs are also commonly seen. While the Big Five are a highlight, leopards and rhinos can be elusive—private reserves and conservancies offer the best chances to see all five. In Tanzania and Kenya, clients may witness the Great Migration, while in Rwanda they can encounter mountain gorillas. While no specific animal can be promised, we tailor itineraries to increase the chances of desired sightings.
PACKING & PREPARATION
What should clients pack?
Neutral, breathable layers; a warm jacket; closed-toe shoes; sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses; insect repellent; binoculars and a flashlight. Laundry is usually included at high-end lodges, so advise them to pack light. For more details, view our packing list.
What are the luggage limits on safari flights?
Luggage limits vary depending on the type of flight. For travel between lodges on small bush planes, restrictions are strict: in East Africa, the limit is typically 44 lbs. (20 kg) total, and in Southern Africa, it's 33 lbs. (15 kg) total—including hand luggage. All bags must be soft-sided to fit into small cargo compartments. On commercial regional flights, such as Cape Town to Kruger or Victoria Falls to Johannesburg, allowances are more generous and align with standard airline policies—usually 44 lbs. (20 kg) in economy class and 66 lbs. (30 kg) in business class. Our team will confirm the exact baggage limits based on the itinerary and flight arrangements.
Can clients bring plastic bags?
Several African countries, including Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, have implemented strict bans on single-use plastics—travelers should avoid packing plastic bags and opt for reusable alternatives.

Is the water safe to drink?

Can clients with mobility concerns travel on safari?

What kind of safari vehicles are used?
- Southern Africa: Open-sided 4x4 safari vehicles.
- East Africa: Closed vehicles with pop-up roofs in national parks, open-sided vehicles in private conservancies.
Can clients have a private vehicle?
Yes, for an added cost. Availability is not guaranteed - especially in high season.
What else can clients do beyond game drives?

Will they have Wi-Fi?
Most lodges and hotels offer Wi-Fi, though some remote camps encourage a digital detox.
How much should they tip?
Tipping guidelines are included in pre-travel materials. Cash is preferred and US dollars are welcome, but some camps accept credit card tips.
TRAVEL & BOOKING QUESTIONS
When should clients book?
9–12 months in advance is recommended, especially for peak season (July–October and Christmas-New Year holidays). We can also accommodate last-minute requests where availability allows.
Are there any vaccinations required?
Most popular safari destinations do not require any mandatory vaccinations, including yellow fever—unless travelers are arriving from or through a country where yellow fever is present. For instance, Tanzania requires proof of vaccination if arriving from Kenya, though Kenya itself does not require it. Malaria medication isn’t mandatory but is recommended for certain regions. We encourage guests to consult their doctor or a travel clinic for the most current guidance based on their itinerary.
Is travel protection required?
Yes. We require comprehensive coverage that includes cancellation, medical emergencies, and evacuation.
Do clients need a visa?
Visa rules vary and change quite often. We’ll guide you and your clients through the entry requirements. You can also use this useful tool: Travel Requirements for Your Luxury Safari | African Travel Inc.
Can safaris be customized?
Yes—customizing is our specialty! We’ll design a tailor-made itinerary based on each guest’s preferences, interests, and budget.
Can you help with flights?
Absolutely. We can book international and regional flights.
What are your booking terms?
Our booking terms depend on the type of product booked. A non-refundable deposit is required to confirm a reservation, followed by final payment. The specific amounts and due dates vary and will be advised by our safari consultants.
Do you pay commission or offer net rates?
Yes, African Travel pays 15% commission on land, air-inclusive packages and travel protection. We also offer net rates on request.
When will I receive my commission?
Agent commission is paid in the month after travel.
