Our Epic Adventures in Rwanda

An encounter with a silverback gorilla and his family can be a hair-raising experience and one you’ll likely never forget!  As adventures go, Rwanda is exciting. The country truly is the stuff of dreams, with its rich and lush green landscapes, volcanic mountains, welcoming people, exciting energy, and extraordinary wildlife.   Here’s a glimpse at our team's extraordinary journey hosting advisors and some footage of a little gorilla discovering his piece of Rwanda.

 

 

The transfer from Kigali to Kamembe on Rwanda Air offers a bird’s eye view of the country’s green and glorious landscapes made more vibrant by its sweet red earth.  Rwanda bursts with flowers, its streets filled with the commerce of daily life and women wrapped in colorful dresses gracefully carrying a basket with a bounty of fruit or vegetables on their heads, its forest are filled with birdsong, chattering golden monkeys and lots more.

 

 

For a country that was in turmoil just 25 years ago, today a united Rwanda stands as an extraordinary example of the best of humanity. While the progressive and vibrant capital city Kigali buzzes day and night, visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial museum provides a sober look into the country’s not too distant past and offers a lesson in forgiveness and learning. 

 

We experienced the pristine Nyungwe National Park, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, from a dazzling perspective on the Canopy Walkway.  Suspended above a ravine in the lush mountain rainforest of Nyungwe National Park, the canopy walkway provides an exhilarating perspective on the ancient treetops and wildlife. The 160m long and 70m high suspension bridge is accessible as part of a guided tour along the Igishigishigi trail. Don’t worry about fear of heights, if Joanna, our Marketing Manager could do it, anyone can!! Incredible experience!

 

Our group got to see other natural wonders flourish including a working tea plantation, when we rested our heads for two nights at One&Only Nyungwe House, a luxury lodge in the heart of the jungle.

 

 

Some say the world's best teas begin on Rwanda's steep hills with rich volcanic soils and plentiful rainfall. Locally grown and harvested tea is shipped to tea enthusiasts all over the world. Over 97% of tea is exported, and only 3% is sold locally. 

 

 

Trekking in search of Rwenzori Colobus monkeys is also on offer in Nyungwe Forest. These great looking monkeys found here in troops of several hundred individuals, are believed to be among the largest numbers worldwide. 

 

 

Some of Rwanda’s most captivating scenery is at Lake Kivu which is home to hundreds of islands.  Our adventure continued along its shoreline to Volcanoes National Park and the dreamy One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, a jungle sanctuary and sensory delight surrounded by a eucalyptus forest. 

 

 

At One&Only Gorilla’s nest we spent two days hiking into the mountains of Volcanoes National Park, guided by an excellent team of seasoned rangers, to discover Rwanda’s star attraction—the endangered mountain gorillas. Being in the presence of these animals – who we share 98% of our DNA with—in their own natural habitat was an incredible and awe-filled experience.
