Q&A WITH AMI VITALE

TreadRight Wildlife Ambassador Ami Vitale joined a Q&A hosted by African Travel's Lucille Sive to answer questions about her experience meeting and filming Shaba. In addition to helping elephants, Ami shares how the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is also empowering Samburu women to be the first-ever female elephant keepers in all of Africa.

CAPTIVATING KENYA

The short film is set in Kenya’s Reteti Elephant Sanctuary located in Northern Kenya. Featured in our Captivating Kenya journey, Reteti is the first indigenous owned and run sanctuary for orphaned elephants. Guests visit the sanctuary on a special MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience and leave knowing the elephants will be tucked into bed and fed milk. For every couple that books a trip to Reteti, African Travel will donate two bed-time blankets and 3 bottles of milk to the sanctuary.

Elephant calves playing at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

"At the Reteti Elephant Rescue in Kenya, a sanctuary dear to my heart, I’ve had the honor of documenting a story from the beginning in 2016, when their first matriarch named Shaba arrived. This MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience provides guests the opportunity to visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, which takes in orphaned and abandoned elephant calves, rehabilitates them and eventually releases them back into the wild. The experience allows travelers to connect with and learn from the keepers of the sanctuary, who are all from the local community and formally trained in the care of the elephant calves. Through these opportunities, livelihoods are improving, and wildlife is returning, proving that wildlife and humanity can work in harmony to provide support to the populations that occupy nature’s magnificent ecosystems."- Ami Vitale, TreadRight Wildlife Ambassador.
