Activities

Admire the Architecture

Windhoek, as a former German colony, is densely packed with reminders of its Germanic past. Take a walk through the city center and you'll notice a lot of German colonial-era architecture mixed in with the modern office buildings.

Christuskirche, a Neo-Baroque cathedral built in 1907 at the height of German colony control, is the most striking example. The design of this Lutheran church by architect Gottlieb Redecker is reminiscent of a gingerbread house, making it an unofficial symbol of the city. The altarpiece is a replica of Rubens' famous Resurrection of Lazarus.

Katutura Township

Katutura, located to the north of the city center, was the township where the city's black residents were relocated during apartheid. In the local Herero language, the name means "the place where no one wants to live," which gives a good indication of the conditions endured there. While poverty persists, conditions have improved, and with 60% of Windhoek's population residing there, a visit to Katutura is likely the only way to gain an understanding of how urban Namibians live. The local art scene is thriving. There are also numerous great little makeshift restaurants where you can sample the local kapana (barbecued beef, slathered in a secret chilli spice known only to the vendor).

Learn About Apartheid at the Independence Memorial Museum

Explore the inspiring history of Namibia at the Independence Memorial Museum, it details the country’s long road to freedom and equality through informative displays, paintings and artefacts from the struggle. Outside the museum, you’ll find a statue of Namibian revolutionary and its first ever President, Sam Nujoma, and a statue dedicated to the Genocide Memorial, a sobering reminder of atrocities against Namibians by German troops during colonial times. Next door, visit the National Museum of Namibia to discover captivating displays of San rock paintings and the restored German fort building, dating back to 1890. Experience the wonder of Namibia's past in these two unique museums.

Go Birding at the National Botanic Garden of Namibia

Discover the raw beauty of Namibia's indigenous flora and fauna at the National Botanic Garden. This 30-acre garden showcases desert-adapted species, including aloe, succulents, acacias, and a quiver tree forest. It's also home to 75 bird species and the charismatic rock hyrax.
