Kenya, Nairobi

Hemingways Nairobi is a small luxury plantation-style hotel in the peaceful suburb of Karen. The beautifully furnished rooms feature expansive vaulted ceilings and balconies overlooking the lawns and Ngong Hills.  All rooms are sprawling with large ensuite bathrooms, which are lined with hand-cut Italian marble and feature a walk-in closet, double vanity, separate toilet, bath and shower.  The rooms also have complimentary Wi-Fi, LED television, dual telephone lines, bathroom telephone, air conditioning and ceiling fan, personalized bar, electronic safe, hairdryer, bathrobes and slippers.  The menus are contemporary European in style, with an ultra-modern twist using locally sourced artisan producers and accompanied by the finest selection of wines.  The Brasserie, known in Kenya for its steaks specially fed beef grilled on a charcoal oven using “a la plancha” and sous-vide techniques.   For breakfast or tea, pastries and breads freshly baked daily in the bakery are an added feature to your culinary experience. Other amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, a bar, and a wine cellar.

2. Tortilis Camp

Kenya, Amboseli National Park

Tortilis Camp is named after the local Acacia Tortilis tree, and is situated just outside the Park in an area of unspoiled woodland. The thatch covered tents are large and spacious, and feature king or twin beds, elegant en-suite bathrooms and private verandas. With Mt. Kilimanjaro peering down over the entire camp, each of the tents have glorious views of the mountain. Tortilis Camp prides itself in serving up fresh homegrown salads and vegetables from its healthy vegetable garden. From impressive bush breakfasts out in the middle of the plains, to homemade pasta and bread at the camp, the Tortilis chefs excel with every meal. The camp guides are based in camp and know their backyard intimately. More than half of the guides are Maasai, and together, have combined guiding experience of 80 years. In between safari activities, enjoy the swimming pool, or indulge in a massage, manicure or pedicure.

3. Elsa's Kopje

Kenya, Meru National Park

Elsa’s Kopje is unashamedly romantic, beautifully styled and sculpted into Mughwango Hill, above the site of George Adamson’s original camp, where he raised and released orphan lions, long before conservation became fashionable. Overlooking the vast plains of Meru National Park, each of Elsa’s Kopje’s open-fronted cottages is uniquely crafted around the rocks, with a large bedroom, en-suite bathroom, open sitting room, private deck with breathtaking views. The camp is renowned for its delicious cuisine. Lunches are sumptuous fresh salads and pastas, accompanied with herbs from the camp garden, and served with homemade bread, freshly baked in the camp’s traditional outdoor pizza oven. Dinner is almost always outside, with candlelit tables laid out under the stars.

4. Sand River Masai Mara Camp

Kenya, Masai Mara

Sand River Masai Mara is located on the banks of the Sand River, within the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Comprising only 16 tents, including a family tent, the camp replicates the heyday of exclusive tented camps of the late 1920’s. The spacious en-suite tents feature a bedroom and lounge, and amenities include a bathtub, outdoor shower, solar heated hot water, twin vanity, writing desk, hairdryer, digital safe and a charging point with universal adapter. The camp is divided into two separate but adjoining campsites, with each area possessing its own designated dining and public areas, thereby creating an increased sense of exclusivity and privacy. Additional facilities include a billiard room, library and refreshing swimming pool with a large sun deck. Wi-Fi is available in the main reception areas. Sand River Masai Mara is an ideal destination for exceptional game viewing at any time of the year.
