Why Kenya

Home to the Great Migration and the Maasai Mara, Kenya is a top destination for safari lovers. With a wealth of wildlife, each diverse area has its own allure.

Kenya is the birthplace of the safari and perfect for year-round game viewing. Here you will find Africa's oldest national park and conservancies leading the way in protecting cultures and wildlife. With a diversity of large predators and rare species, its best to combine a few areas. Enjoy the beauty of Amboseli’s large tusked elephants, marvel at Mount Kilimanjaro, and see animals found only in Samburu and Shaba National Reserves.

Kenya Safari FAQ

Kenya Safari Frequently Asked Questions

Kenya is a year-round safari destination. The dry season (June–October) is ideal for game viewing, while the wet season (November–May) brings lush landscapes and newborn wildlife. The Great Migration typically arrives in the Maasai Mara between July and October, offering unforgettable river crossings and predator action.

Pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing, comfortable closed-toe shoes, a sunhat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Early mornings and evenings can be cool, so bring a warm layer. Don’t forget binoculars and a camera for wildlife and landscapes.

Most international travelers arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. From there, charter flights or private transfers connect guests to safari destinations such as the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, or Laikipia.

The official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). U.S. dollars are widely accepted in lodges and safari camps, but local currency is useful for shops and tips. Currency exchange and ATMs are available in Nairobi and other towns.

Kenya uses UK-style Type G outlets with a voltage of 240V and frequency of 50Hz. Bring a travel adapter to charge your phone, camera, and other electronics.

Tap water is not recommended for drinking. Safari camps and lodges provide bottled or filtered water for guests throughout their stay.

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended, covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost belongings for peace of mind during your safari.

A safari of 7–10 days allows you to experience Kenya’s highlights. This usually includes time in the Maasai Mara, Amboseli with views of Mount Kilimanjaro, and another region such as Samburu or Laikipia.

Tipping is customary for guides, drivers, and lodge staff. Most camps provide recommended guidelines, and gratuities are always appreciated for excellent service.

Kenyan safari lodges serve a mix of international cuisine and local specialties. You may enjoy grilled meats, fresh vegetables, tropical fruits, and traditional dishes such as nyama choma (barbecue) and sukuma wiki (greens).

Kenya enjoys a moderate climate. The dry season (June–October) is best for game drives and the Migration. The short rains (November–December) and long rains (March–May) bring green landscapes and fewer visitors, offering a different perspective for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts.
